Women by writers 'Then' and 'Now'
WOMEN BY WRITERS 'THEN' AND 'NOW'
Women are always pushed into suffering and made to endure the pain, as though it is their responsibility to bear it. But today the thought of being suppressed has itself become unbearable .These two contradiction in fiction is with the word 'THEN' and 'NOW' in this paper. The struggle to seek their freedom and identity as well in the patriarchal society has been the main motive in the life of women in earlier times. But women belongs to the 21st century try to reverse their role in made the dominated itself.
I here came across two such books one is by a renowned feminist writer Shashi Deshpande's "Dark Holds No Terror " and the other by the contemporary writer Novoneel Chakraborty one of his famous works "Black Suits You". Let me just expose my thought and the way i found how the time period changes the matter in soceity and in a literature as well
Shashi Deshpande is an award winning Indian novelist . Her novels deal with the women belonging to Indian middle class , dealing the world within them. She portrays her characters in a realistic manner. However in this novel The Dark Holds No Terror she brings out the shocking experience of the protagonist Saru, as her husband Manu whom she fell in love with and married to against her parents. Where as after marriage Manu's sense of inferiority on her greater social status he started to dominate her in a bed.
And the significance of the title , the darkness which holds terror in every life , made saru capable of overcome and see things more clearly. As realising Saru began to understood things are no more terrible. And there is no need to escape from the darkness or the course of it.
Where as in Novoneel's novel Black Suits You we come across reflection contemporary soceity . It narrates the story of a 27 year old Kiyan Roy, wrote a triology -Handcuffs. As a reticent he remained an anonymous. But after the success of his triology he decides to show up. And when he does that his readers falls for his stunning looks and his sense of humour. There was this mysterious girl who follows hin everywhere he goes and the way it is done in his novels. And ofcourse the protagonist at the end turned out to be the antagonist . The writer here brings out the change of time we underwent with a mysterious relationship and the way women reacts to it. Through this he talks about how the contemporary women are individualistic and are resisting to submit.
Atlast from these two novels , the recent fiction portrays women not just an object of pleasure or as a submissive group but depicted as an independent in thought and action capable of reversing the role which is actually imposed on them for ages in the name of culture
